My brain has often worked through analogies. I have had a hard time communicating what's in my head and I've had varied success with analogies. Analogies only work for communication purposes if there is a shared understanding of the analog. Relying on things like popular media references such as Lord of the rings or Star wars for analogies only work if people have seen those and are familiar with them.
